Yolanda is a Black, disabled, DC grandmother facing a critical transition, trying to keep herself and her grandchildren housed while waiting on benefits that have been stalled by shutdowns, snow closings, and court decisions.. Your support provides the essential resources needed to keep four children, their grandmother, and a toddler under one safe, warm roof. She only needs $104/199 as of 2/7/2026 to keep housing (See bill here.)
If she also got $200 a month to help her with transportation and other needs outside food stamps, like diapers and hygiene items, too, that would be heroic. Anything over the housing bill goes to those expenses.
Keeping the Family Together
Yolanda's journey is one of resilience and unwavering devotion to her family. Like many of us, she works tirelessly to provide a safe home. Last year, she was diagnosed with both a neurological disease and took in her 5 grandchildren from a very bad situation.
She finally has full custody, but unexpected financial challenges have recently threatened the very foundation of her home. No family should ever have to choose between a roof over their heads and a meal on the table. especially not somebody who worked her whole life cleaning homes and buildings after emerging from the foster system herself.
The core of Yolanda's world is her grandchildren. She knows the hidden dangers of the foster care system and just wants to care for them and keep them safe.
By coming together as a community, we can ensure that the family remains intact while Yolanda continues to work on stability.
